Velvet is a type of woven fabric in which the cut threads are evenly distributed with a short, dense pile, or nap, that creates a fuzzy, smooth, say "Ooooo" when you feel it, surface. While the fabric used to create the texture can be cotton, silk, wool, cashmere, or linen, velvet made entirely from silk has market prices of several hundred dollars per yard. Since this blazer only cost $12 at a vintage shop, I'm pretty sure it's cotton. If it was silk? I'd be apartment less, or car less, albeit I'd be fuzzily and fabulously outfitted in my apartment- or car-less state, but I digress. The other reason I'm not without necessities and wearing velvet? The Industrial Revolution! Before, only the nobility could afford it, because it was so costly to weave the texture without a powered loom. So now, I can be like King Richard II of England and request to be outfitted in velveto.
